WordPress has no built-in document library — the Media Library stores files but cannot display them as a searchable, filterable list for visitors. Several plugins fill that gap for free, but they differ enormously in what “free” actually includes.

The most complete free tier, and the newest plugin hereAll three layouts, instant search, filter dropdowns, sortable columns, a native block, drag-and-drop upload and no cap on documents. It does not have a decade of reviews behind it, and if you want a vendor with a long track record and a staffed support team, that is a real consideration.
Document Library Lite
The established leader’s free tierA searchable, sortable, responsive table with a choice of columns, and a dedicated Documents section in your admin. Grid, folders, filter dropdowns, drag-and-drop upload, CSV import and previews are paid, across Essentials ($149/yr) and Advanced ($199/yr). If you genuinely need a simple table of downloads and you value the vendor’s maturity, it does that job.
FileBird
A folder plugin firstThe nicest folder UI in this list, added to your Media Library. The old 10-folder free cap has been removed. It organises your existing media rather than giving documents their own home with their own metadata — which is either exactly what you want or exactly what you do not.
Download Monitor
Download-tracking firstA capable free core with good analytics; the library display and most of the interesting features live in paid extensions. If your question is “how many people downloaded this file”, start here rather than with a library plugin.
WP Download Manager
The broadest free surface of the older pluginsPassword protection, basic role access, download counting, and a very large add-on catalogue behind it. The trade-off is complexity: the packaging is spread across many extensions and the interface shows its age.

One question settles most of it.
Do you need to display documents to visitors, or organise files for yourself?
- Display to visitors → FileDeck, or Document Library Lite and Pro. Both give documents their own area with their own metadata and render a searchable front-end library.
- Organise your Media Library → FileBird. It is built for that, and its folder UI is the best of the bunch.
- Track downloads → Download Monitor.
- Sell files → WordPress Download Manager, or Easy Digital Downloads.
- Internal document control with check-in/check-out → WP Document Revisions, free and open source — a different category of tool.
04What free costs you
A free tier is funded somehow, and the question is where the line sits.
Most plugins here fund development by gating the organisational features. That is reasonable — those are the features organisations pay for. What varies is which side of the line the basics land on.

Does WordPress have a built-in document library?
No. The Media Library stores files but has no categories for documents, no front-end display, and no search or filtering for visitors. A plugin is required.

Is there a free document library plugin with no document limit?
Yes — FileDeck’s free version has no cap on documents, and Document Library Lite states no limit either. FileBird’s free version once capped you at 10 folders, but that limit has been removed.
Can I display PDFs in a searchable table for free?
Yes. FileDeck and Document Library Lite both do this in their free versions. FileDeck’s free tier adds filter dropdowns and grid and folder layouts on top.
Do free document library plugins support access control?
Generally not in a meaningful way. File-level access control is paid across the category, including ours at $59/yr. A couple of free tiers include basics: WP Download Manager has password protection and simple role limits, and Download Monitor can restrict a download to logged-in members.
