Switch in three steps
Install FileDeck alongside
Add FileDeck Pro to the same site, with FileBird still active. The import reads FileBird’s folders without changing them, so FileBird carries on organising your Media Library.
Click Import
Go to Documents → Import & Export → Migrate. FileDeck shows a FileBird card with the number of documents it found — a count that already leaves out images, video and audio. Choose Publish or Import as drafts, then click Import.
Review, then publish
Spot-check the imported documents, then add the FileDeck block or [filedeck] shortcode to a page. FileBird carries on organising your media in wp-admin.

Documents, titles & descriptions
Each document filed in a folder becomes one FileDeck document, taking its title and its caption (or description) as the description.
Your folder tree becomes categories
Folders, including sub-folders, are rebuilt as document categories with the same nesting. A file filed in more than one folder is placed in each matching category.
Images, video and audio stay out
FileBird organises your whole Media Library, so the importer brings across the other files in your folders — PDFs, Office files, text, archives and the like — and leaves images, video and audio where they are. Items that sit only in a collection, or in no folder, are not imported.
Linked, not copied
Each document points at the same Media Library file it did before, so the import doesn’t duplicate anything on disk.
Check before you switch
- Which files moved. The importer targets documents, not every media item. Compare the count on the Migrate card with the files you expect, and add anything else by hand.
- Access. The importer doesn’t read access or link settings, so imported documents take your normal visibility (a WordPress password set on a file itself, which is rare, comes across as it is). If some should be private, import as drafts and set FileDeck’s access rules before you publish. A restricted document’s file moves into FileDeck’s protected vault, so check anything that links to that file directly.
- Existing library pages. If you publish documents with FileBird’s Document Library add-on, its page settings aren’t imported. Replace the block or shortcode on each page once you’ve checked the new library.

Questions about moving
Will my photos come across as documents?
Not by default. The importer leaves images, video and audio in the Media Library and brings across the other files in your FileBird folders. A developer can include media types if you need them — see the full walkthrough.
Does FileBird keep working afterwards?
Yes. The import reads FileBird’s folders without changing them, and files are linked rather than copied, so each document points at the same Media Library file. You can keep using FileBird to organise media in wp-admin. If you later restrict a document in FileDeck, its file moves into FileDeck’s protected vault, so check anything that links to it directly.
Why would I use both?
They do different jobs. FileBird organises your Media Library in wp-admin, and its Document Library add-on can display folders to visitors. FileDeck is built around the document workflow: content search of supported local files, private collections, versions and review reminders in Pro. You can keep FileBird for media while FileDeck handles documents. Compare the two.
Is it safe to run more than once?
Yes. Each imported document records which file it came from, so re-running skips what is already in rather than creating duplicates.
