A real render, on your own server

The preview is a genuine rendering of the PDF’s first page, not a placeholder graphic and not a stock "PDF" badge. It is generated on your own server and cached as the document’s featured image — nothing is sent to a third-party service, so your documents never leave your site. Once generated, the thumbnail is a normal WordPress image, so it benefits from your usual image sizes and caching.

How do I turn it on?

1. Go to Documents → Settings → Features.
2. Tick Automatic PDF thumbnails (first-page preview in grid & image views).
3. Save your changes.

From then on, every PDF you add gets a first-page thumbnail automatically. To create previews for PDFs you added earlier, click Generate missing thumbnails on the same screen — FileDeck backfills them in the background.

Thumbnails appear anywhere the document’s featured image is shown: the grid layout, the image column in the table layout, and hover preview cards. A document that already has a featured image keeps it — FileDeck only fills in a thumbnail where one is missing.

What if my server can’t render PDFs?

Rasterizing a PDF needs Imagick (compiled against Ghostscript) on your server. Most managed WordPress hosts provide this. Where it isn’t available, FileDeck doesn’t fail or leave blank cards — it falls back to a clean file-type badge and tells you in Settings that thumbnails can’t be generated on this server. FAQ

Does this send my PDFs anywhere?

No. Rendering happens entirely on your own server. No document content is sent to FileDeck or any external service.

Can I use my own image instead of the first page?

Yes. Set a featured image on the document and FileDeck uses that; the automatic first-page render only fills in where a document has no image of its own.

It’s on, but an old PDF still shows a badge.

Thumbnails are generated for new uploads automatically; for PDFs added before you enabled the feature, click Generate missing thumbnails under Documents → Settings → Features. If a badge remains after that, your server likely lacks Imagick + Ghostscript — see system requirements.

Do non-PDF files get thumbnails too?

Automatic first-page rendering is for PDFs. Other file types show your featured image if set, otherwise a file-type badge.
