PDF thumbnails or previews not appearing Pro
Fix missing PDF thumbnails and previews in FileDeck: the Imagick + Ghostscript server requirement, regenerating after enabling, and preview file-type limits.
Updated August 5, 2026
Automatic PDF thumbnails and extended previews are Pro features. When grid or image views show a generic icon where a first-page preview should be, work through these checks in order.
1. Is the feature switched on?
Thumbnails are opt-in. Go to Documents → Settings and check Automatic PDF thumbnails (first-page preview in grid & image views). If the box was off, existing PDFs have no thumbnail yet — new uploads generate one, and replacing a file regenerates it.
2. Does your server have Imagick + Ghostscript?
FileDeck renders the first page of each PDF on your own server, using the Imagick PHP extension backed by Ghostscript. Nothing is sent anywhere — which also means the server has to be able to do the work.
If the requirement is missing, the settings screen says so next to the checkbox: "needs Imagick + Ghostscript on your server — not detected, so nothing is generated." FileDeck degrades gracefully rather than erroring: documents still list and download normally, they just show file-type icons instead of page previews.
Most managed WordPress hosts ship both. If yours doesn’t, ask support to enable the Imagick PHP extension with PDF (Ghostscript) support — it’s a standard request.
3. The thumbnail exists but looks stale
Thumbnails are tied to the file, not the document. If you replaced a PDF and still see the old page image, hard-refresh first (browsers cache images aggressively). Replacing a file through the document’s Replace file flow regenerates the thumbnail; swapping the attachment through other plugins may not.
4. Previews open for PDFs but not Office files
The free version previews PDFs and images in the lightbox. Office, audio and video previews are part of Pro’s extended previews — if those file types open a download instead of a preview, check your licence is active under Documents → Settings → License.
Still stuck? Email support@getfiledeck.com with your host’s name and the file type that fails — the settings screen’s requirement note (present or absent) is the first thing worth mentioning.
